"What is your family like?" I asked as I shifted around the passenger seat in our blue Ford Escort.
Husband Man and I had only been dating for a few months when we made the decision to visit his family down in Mississippi.
We were completely convinced we were right for each other and wanted to shout it out to everyone, his family included.
I lived with my family in North Carolina back then and met him while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg. He was a mainstay at our house, always coming over to eat a home cooked meal on the weekends and also….to spend time with me.
He became like a second son to my parents, he was that close to us.
And now, it was my turn to meet his side.
"Oh you know…they are just like any other family."
He responded, smiling as he turned the car onto the interstate. I asked him to elaborate on this statement and he went on to tell me about his brother and two sisters.
As we drove closer and closer to our destination, my nerves started pulling into overdrive. I found myself asking him and myself crazy questions, "what if they don't like me?" and "what if I say something I don't mean to say?"
It was then and there when I realized what he must have went through during the first hours of meeting my family.
I was starting to realize that meeting the in-laws was no easy task and if I survived this visit, I would deem myself the luckiest woman alive.
When we arrived, I found my mother-in-law in the kitchen, making these Chicken Cream Cheese Crescents.
Being the seasoned cook that she is, she walked me over to the stove and said, "These are one of his favorite meals and and I'm going to show you how to make them."
Not only was I new to his family, but I was also new to cooking. Making recipes that utilized more then 5 ingredients was not my cup of tea.
As she stood there, with a mixing spoon in one hand and spices in the other, all I kept thinking to ask her was, "can you write this recipe down because I'm probably not going to remember it on our way back to North Carolina?"
It took me a few years after that day to make these for him. The proximity between our two families made it difficult to establish a close bond. Mustering up the courage to call my steady boyfriend's parents was a difficult task.
However, I finally took the plunge one lazy afternoon and called them for the recipe.
It has been in our collection since then 😉
